SMART Goals

When selecting goals for your teams and projects, make sure that they are SMART.

Specific

  • Goals should be well-defined, clear, and concise
  • Specific Example The goal is to design and build a custom drone using 3D printing technology and remote-control software. This means that the drone will be designed and built from scratch, with custom specifications and features, and will incorporate 3D printing and remote-control software.

Measurable

  • Goals should be quantifiable and have specific criteria for success
  • Measurable Example The project will be considered complete when the custom drone is fully built and functional. To measure progress, specific milestones can be established such as completing the design and 3D printing of the drone frame, adding the necessary hardware and electronic components, and programming the remote control software. These milestones should be tracked on a timeline to ensure that the project stays on track and is completed within the next four months.

Achievable:

  • Goals should be realistic and attainable with the resources and time available.
  • Achievable Example: To achieve this goal, the necessary resources must be accessed. This includes 3D printing technology and remote control software, which can be accessed through either purchasing or borrowing. The drone must also be designed and programmed with the necessary hardware and electronic components. Additionally, materials such as plastic filament, electronic components, and a remote control will need to be acquired.

Relevant

  • Goals should be aligned with the overall project or organizational objectives.
  • Relevant Example: The custom drone will be a functional and innovative piece of technology. It can be used for aerial photography, videography, surveying, or just for fun. It is relevant because it incorporates the latest technology and can be used for a variety of purposes.

Time-bound

  • Goals should have a deadline or target date for completion.
  • Time-bound Example: The project must be completed within the next four months. This means that a detailed timeline must be established and followed, with specific deadlines for each milestone. This will ensure that the project stays on track and is completed within the desired timeframe. Additionally, regular progress updates can be provided to ensure that the project is moving forward according to schedule.
